There have existed rumours that the species name was chosen because the fish were originally found in the foothills of Gunung (Mount) Talang, an active volcano in West Sumatra province, Sumatra, Indonesia. It was actually decided upon in reference to the red body colouration of males, and although the type specimens were indeed collected from West Sumatra the locality was the Batang (river)  Si Joontour close to the town of Painan and almost 200km away from Gunung Talang. It is possible that the species is endemic to this region though as records from outside the area are non-existent.
